New housing site threat to Theale!

The area between Theale and the M4 has been identified as a possible site for up to 450 homes by West Berkshire Council. The area comprises:

• Whitehart Meadow - see photos
• Old sewage works at the end of Blossom Lane - see photos
• The meadow between Theale and Junction 12 - see photos

This housing allocation will be on top of the 350 homes at Lakeside already given planning permission by a government inspector. The total of 800 houses would increase the size of Theale by nearly 70% and would:

• Wreck the distinctive village character of Theale
• Over-load the primary and secondary schools
• Add to the congestion on the roads
• Over-load the doctor's surgery and other services
• Fill the gap between Theale, Tilehurst and Calcot, making Theale a suburb of Reading.

Another site has been proposed for Pincents Hill, on the other side of the gap. That site is on the hill behind Savacenter.

The public meeting held on 18th June to discuss the proposals voted overwhelmingly that there should be no more housing development in Theale.
